There are four linguistic features of abstract: 1) Limited Length

2) Categories of Abstracts 3) Complete Content 4) Formalized Structure Categories of Abstracts

A. Descriptive (Indicative) Abstracts A descriptive abstract usually states the

general subject matter of the document that follows. It tells in a qualitative way what the paper or report contains.

B. Informational Abstracts

C. Informational-indicative Abstracts An information-indicative abstract is a

combined form that bears specific information about the principal findings and results and general information about the rest of the document. This type of abstract offers fewer details, instead, giving emphasis to the author’s chief contribution

Writing Requirements for Abstract

3) Consistency

Abstract=A1+A2+A3+A4+A5

A1(background)

Q2: What research topic is the paper to focus on? A2(main topic)

Q3: What method or material do you use to support your main point of view? A3(Specific investigations) Q4: What conclusion will you draw? A4(Result and suggestion)

Q5: What is the main contribution of the paper? A5(conclusion and contribution A1 to Q1 (one sentence) A2 to Q2 (one topic sentence, one or two supporting sentences that set forth the research topic if necessary) A3to Q3 (two or three sentences to give specific information about the research)
