Surely He Is Not Mad:

My Comments on "The Tell-Tale Heart"

I think the narrator is not a mad person. The reason why I am saying this is that the narrator has a very clear mind. We can see it from the plan he'd made to murder the old man. A mad person couldn't be so meticulous and come up with such a detailed plan. In my opinion, this plan is so perfect because the narrator managed to kill the old man ultimately and if he didn't confess his crime out loud, the police won't even suspect him. What's more, the narrator calmly dismembered the old man and put his body under the floor. Is a mad person able to do that?

As for the reason why the narrator has to kill the old man, I guess it has a great deal to do with his self-attempt. This inferiority complex blinds him. Maybe the narrator was a servant of the old man . The old man treated him well and politely. But the narrator is so self-abased that he/she took it as some kind of disdain. The narrator might think that the old man is a hypocrite. In his/her opinion , the old man seemed to be very kind , but he despise him/her deep inside, which pisses him/her off. At the beginning of the passage, the narrator once said that 'The disease had sharpened my sense', but he actually denied that he's mad. In my opinion , this is some kind of indication. For instance, in real life , we know that drunk people usually claim that they are sober. Ok, some of them are telling the truth but most aren't. Mad people usually don't admit they are crazy either. Assume that you friend ,who drank a lot of alcohol and then started to talk nonsense ,tells you that he's not drunk, will you believe him? The same way, the narrator claims that he is not mad after committed such a murder ,will anyone believe it? So I think the narrator is attempt to make people pity him/her or the judge to give him/her a lighter punishment.

In short, the narrator is not mad at all. To be frank, it's never the madness that murdered the old man , but the narrator's own desire. People always do whatever they want to ,then make excuses for their behavior.
