Connotative Meanings of Red

Abstract: Although “red” has a basic meaning---(having) the colour of blood or

fire,it has many other meanings. The following text will focus on explaining the connotative meaning of “red”.

Key words:red,connotative meanings

Linguistics is a comparatively young science but it has developed several important

branches.

The

major

branches

include

phonetics,phonology,

morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Semantics is concerned with the study of meaning in all its formal aspects. And according to the British linguist G.Leech, meaning in its broadest sense can be classified into seven types ------conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflective meaning, collocative meaning and thematic meaning.

The seven types of meaning are not so respective, but interrelated even overlapped. As is known to all,“(having) the colour of blood or fire” is the basic meaning of“Red”,it is its’ conceptual meaning. However, this text will focus on analysing the connotative meaning of “red”.

Just look at the following sentences:

(a)We can see the red lanterns everywhere during the Spring festival. (b)His face is red with shame.

(c)It's dangerous to drive through a red light. (d)He is preparing a red revenge for his dead mother.

(e)He was a Red after the People's Republic of China was established.

In sentence (a),we can understand it to Be the lanterns colour is “red”. Then why we use“red” to describe the lantern, but not “blue” or “black”?That’s because “red lanterns” are seen “during the Spring festival”(the most important festival in China),and the atmosphere on that day is happy and harmonious. That’s to say,“red” in (a) represents “happiness” and “festival”. According to this,it’s easier to understand some customs in China------using red paper to list the superiors in a test and red paper containing money as a gift to children or bossusing “red” to describe someone is very popular, etc. They are based on the meaning of “red” in China------happy,lucky and honorary.

As for (b),we can read it as “the colour of his face become red because of shame”.And “shame” can be replaced with “anger”,“embarrassment” and “shyness”, because when one’s face is “red”,he may be angry, shameful or shy.Another example is“red rag”,it is a piece of red cloth used to irritate the bull in the arena. So it’s obvious that “red” has the function of expressing one’s emotion, that’s its’ meaning of“angry”,“shame” and “shy”.

In sentence(c),it's dangerous to drive through a red light because “red light” is a signal of danger. In other words, the traffic department warns drivers to stop and be careful by the light of red because “red” has the meaning of “dangerous”.For this, the accountant usually bold the deficit with red colour,so there are some phrases like“red figure”(deficit),“red balance”(deficit balance) and ”out of the red”(profit, extinction of debt). Some other examples like “red ruin”(fire as a disaster),“a red alert”,“go into red”,etc. are based on it.

About (d),it means he will revenge for his dead mother, maybe,by some cruel means.“Red revenge” shows his feeling of extremely angry, sad, and cruel. That’s to say,“red” has the meaning of “cruelty”,“bloody” and “grim” at there.Besides,“red” in “the red rules of tooth and claw”(massacre and club law ) also has the meaning of “cruelty”.

As for (e),“Red” represents a person or a group of person who are communist, socialist or has left-wing ideas, because “red” means “radicalness” at there. What’s more,it also means ”revolutionary” in politics, for example,”red ideas” represents “revolutionary ideas”,”red political authority” means the regime established by the proletariat.

In addition, there are still some other meanings about “red”.For example, ”red tape” means the trivial and massive affairs, also represents the officialism,it comes from the consuetude of tying the briefbag with red strings in England.I summarize this kind of usage as “the terminology comes from a long customary behaviour”,other examples such as “red book”(phone book,it comes from the consuetude of using red-cover book to save the telephone numbers),”red cap”,”red skin”,”red ball” and “red coat”,etc..

However, some of the above meanings of “red” are not only the connotative meaning, but also the social meaning((e)),the collocative meaning (red figure, red ruin, etc.),the affective meaning (Reds, red skin,etc.).From this, the connective relation between these seven types of meaning is obvious.

Therefore,we can not just stop at the conceptual meaning of the words when we understand the meaning of them, but try to understand the connotative meaning and other meanings combine with the context.
