Writing Samples 第一种：比较对比型 Assignment: The Difference between College Education and High School Education (no less than 120 words; within 30 minutes) The Difference between College Education and High School Education Both college education and high school education are critical to a nation’s prosperity. However, there are many differences between them. The contrast between them exists in many aspects. In terms of the attitudes toward learning skills and knowledge, there seems to be a reversal of priority. College education gives priority to teaching students how to learn, believing that students should use the learning skills to acquire knowledge themselves; while high school education puts more emphasis on pouring knowledge into our heads, holding that without the knowledge we have got, we can’t be accepted by any college. The contrast between them can also be seen in their ultimate purpose of education. College education views that students should not only get enough knowledge but also foster their skills and abilities. On the other hand, high school education maintains that its mere task is to deal with the entrance examination to college. Both of them have solid foundation. But we can strike a better balance and gather a superior way from the two extremes. 第二种类型:优缺点比较 Assignment: Nowadays, email has enabled us to keep correspondences with each other more efficiently and conveniently; still there are people who prefer handwriting letters. Make a comparison of the two means and state your opinion. Email and Handwriting Letter Nowadays, with social advance, more and more people tend to keep up correspondences with each other via email. However, there are still many people who hold on to handwriting letters. Email and handwriting letter both server as a way of communication, but they have their own peculiarities. There are both strengths and weaknesses in the two means. The most obvious advantage of email is that is has enabled us to keep correspondences with each other more efficiently and conveniently. For example, your friend will receive your email the moment you send it. Another advantage is that it allows us to correspond with each other more frequently. The defect, however, is that, what we see is only something written by computer itself, and it lacks some familiar things. By contrast, handwriting letters can bring us more true feelings. In addition, handwriting letters can also be saved and we can enjoy them many years later. There is again a fault: it takes a longer time to be delivered to the recipient. Evidently, both ways have their merits and demerits. A combination of their merits might be a step in the right direction. If you wish to give your friend a quick message, you may employ email; if you like to collect letters, you may apply handwriting letters. Some view that pride goes before a fall. Others argue that pride is the resource of confidence. Still others maintain that there is no direct relationship between them. Many people claim that pride goes before a fall, but this argument may be doubted to some extent. It is true that quite a few people fail because of too much pride, but it doesn’t follow that one who is proud will certainly fail. A good case in point is that athletes will do very well if they are proud of their motherland. From my viewpoint, it is not always right to say that pride leads to failure. Many factors may account for one’s failure, and one’s pride shows one’s confidence. However, too much pride may cause one to overlook the obstacles he has to overcome. So, we should be proud, but not arrogant. Without tackling these problems, they tend to suffer from various psychological illnesses, or even physical illnesses. They may not be able to live a normal life, let alone a fulfilling one. The reasons behind psychological problems often vary from one case to another. In current society, quite a few people are under considerable pressure, while many others lack communicative skills and live in an isolated world. Also, most people are ignorant of psychological knowledge about how to keep mentally fit. As psychological health is of great importance to anybody, it’s advisable for us to find some ways to curb mental health problems. First, learn to relax ourselves and take exercise to release pressure. Second, if mental health problems arise, identify its cause and see whether we can do something to make a change. Last, talk to our friends about our problems or seek advice from professionals. Some decide to take up working while some others tend to pursue further study. Were it left to me to choose, I would prefer the latter. The reason for my choice involves several aspects. The most important reason is the job market is getting more and more competitive and a higher degree means more opportunities. My passion for study on campus is another factor. Also playing a part is my parents’ expectations. There are still other factors to account for my choice. Presently, what counts more is what I shall do to get ready for it. Studying hard is the first thing to be reckoned with in my preparation. Without hard work, there would be no success. Additionally, I plan to take a part-time job in order to collect some money for my tuition.
