Good afternoon, teachers. I am an English major student from Class 1303. My name is Zhang Ting. My tutor is Mr. He. Thanks for his help in my thesis writing. Also thank all of you for presenting in the meeting to listen to my report. My tittle is On American Immigrant Culture from the English Only Movements. America, as a country consisted of many immigrants, the earliest immigrants carried their own culture and mixed them with the culture that already existed in America, which formed the American dominant culture, also called WASP. But Immigrants today reserve their own culture, which leads to the conflicts between American WASP and the culture of immigrant countries. In order to avoid the conflicts, assimilating immigrants is necessary. As the sociologist park said, the group live with each other in the ways of migrating, at beginning, they will compete or argue with each other, but with getting to know each other, the conflicts and competition turns into assimilation. Assimilation first appears in A Letter from American Farmer written by Hecter San John Dirk Leif. “The new people” in his book stands for assimilation. Based on this concept, my understanding towards assimilation is that the immigrants accept American language, national identity, sense of worth. In other words, they have the sense of acceptance towards WASP. The topic aims at analyzing the American immigrant culture from American language, analyzing the assimilation of American immigrant culture from the English Only Movements. The character of American language policy is to regards English as center, meanwhile, pushing the other languages aside. The English Only Movements is the typical representative of the policy. The content of it can be divided into two parts: one is to legislate for English as the official language, the other is to oppose Bilingual Education and legislate for English as the only language in America. Finally, in 2001 the United States Congress pass the legislation----No Child Left Behind, which implies that the English Only Movements won. Unifying language is one of the best methods of avoiding conflicts between American WASP and the culture of immigrant countries. The essence of the English Only Movements is to unify American immigrant culture towards unifying language and to display Anglo-Saxon culture. In 1907, the American present Roosevelt once said in his speech: We only have one flag, that is American flag. We only have one language. That is English. We only have one kind of honest. That is the honest towards American people. Thus the English Movements affects the assimilation of the American immigrant culture. The scholars at home and aboard have done many researches on them, but there is little researches which link them together. The topic will use the method of comparative study based on the researches above and make contrast between the development of the English Only movements and American immigrant culture. Also the topic will use literature research method and historical approach. From these methods, the author will get the conclusion that the American immigrant culture will be assimilated. The first part of the thesis will summarize the object of the research---the American immigrant culture, the aims, the significance and the research status. The second part will be divided into two sections. One will discuss what is the assimilation of the American culture. The other will state American sociologists’ theories of it based on the research status at home and aboard. The third part is the most important part of the thesis. It will discuss the relationship between American language and culture. And then will analysis the American immigrant culture from the development of language policy and the aims, the essence and the results of the English Only Movements. The forth chapter will discuss the reasons of the assimilation of the American immigrant culture. The fifth chapter will make conclusion of the thesis. And will emphasize the significance of the topic: assimilating American immigrant culture will remove the value conflicts in immigrant families, will let the immigrant integrate into American society quickly and will be in favour of the development of American politics and economy. Because of the author’s limited ability, and cannot interview immigrant by herself. the research is not comprehensive.
