Is Competitiveness good for our society Why does the idea of competitiveness loom so large in the modern world? Surely because competitiveness of a particular kind is actually taking place around us and is becoming more and more manifest. Althrough mankind has undergone no general improvement in intelligence or morality, our society, in a sense, due to competitiveness, has made extraordinary progress in a variaty of industries. Let us imagine what would our society be like if there is no competitiveness. So much is certian: that we would not do our utmost to achieve good scores in school; that coporates would not arise its savage combative instincts to pursue high profits; and that our country would not double its effort to catch up the speed of the developed countries. A society withont competitiveness, many of us believe, is just like a pool of dead water, still and smelly. Fortunately, with the reform and opening-up policy, a great advance was made in competitiveness, and it was until then the tempo was suddenly raised. Our society began to progress according to a systematic plan. The trickle became a stream; the stream has now become a torrent. Moreover, under the virtue of competitiveness, science and technology have come to pervade every aspect of our lives and, as a result, society is changing at a speed which is quite unprecedented.
